Avoiding Injury Over Christmas

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Unfortunately, at this time of the year, we see a rise in injuries caused by anything from the wet and icy conditions on the roads to lifting Christmas trees from storage etc. So in order to avoid your festive season being marked by pain, we thought we would offer a few tips to keep in mind.

1. Shopping – If you are going to be on your feet for longer than normal, make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes. Also, avoid lugging lots of heavy baggage around. Make regular trips back to the car to drop it off if needed. If the item is particularly large, have a shop assistant help you. If you are carrying many bags, try to distribute the weight evenly in each hand.

2. PRIORITISE YOUR SPINE at all times. Getting heavy boxes of decorations down from a cupboard or loft. Protect your back by avoiding lifting whilst twisted into awkward positions. Use a step ladder/stool and get someone to hold it. Avoid getting into awkward positions and overreaching for things by getting help when you can. Avoid maintaining awkward posture for a prolonged amount of time e.g. Try not to wrap presents on the floor, maintain good posture by sitting in a supportive chair and change position often.

3. Stress – Along with physical stress, mental and emotional stress can add to the strain on your body which makes injuries more likely. If you’ve been rushed off your feet, take a moment to relax. Perhaps do some stretching or have a hot bath.

4. Sleep – During this busy time, it is important we get enough sleep. Over-tiredness can lead to poor posture in our job meaning extra strain on the body and possible injury.

Happy holidays

"I had heard about Avenue from a friend and after two appointments I noticed the difference. The frequent hiccuping has gone, he is much more contented and by early evening he is tucked up in his Moses basket."
