Sports and Remedial Massage

Sports & Remedial Massage Therapy is a deep soft tissue treatment that helps to restore and maintain the full functionality of muscles,  by relieving aches & pains, loosening tight muscles and breaking up adhesions (knots).  Many general aches and pains are caused by everyday lifestyle stresses which may recover naturally over time, but can sometimes develop into more serious and complicated issues if left untreated or may just need an extra helping hand.

Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy can help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance (pre-performance), recover after a big event (post performance), or function well during training. It is also an aid for the prevention and healing of injuries, helping to reduce soreness and tension, and improving relaxation by reducing heart rate and blood pressure.

Sports massage therapy can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement.  It helps stretch out the muscles, working to reduce restrictions within the soft tissues which helps flexibility and reduces fatigue, whether a person is an athlete or a once a week jogger.  You don’t need to be an athlete to benefit from Sports Massage.  If you’re running around with small children all the time, or you have a physically demanding job, a regular sports massage may help you.

The Sports Massage therapist at the Avenue Clinic will use a variety of massage techniques, based on the need of the individual to achieve the best outcome.   This might include stretching techniques to help increase range of motion, general massage techniques to stimulate circulation of the blood and deeper techniques to break down adhesions (knots in the muscle).

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage treats clients with pain or dysfunction caused by any of life’s stresses and from all walks of life.  Although sport can be a common factor with many clients, this is far from being the main issue that is often dealt with.
The aim of Remedial massage is to use a whole body approach to reduce aches and pain and help create change in the soft tissue layers.  The focus being to encourage postural change and restore functional movement of the muscles.  This occurs by using massage to work on the different layers of the muscle tissue, tendons and the fascia – from a deep level of massage to a superficial level of massage, combining both techniques to ensure the most effective treatment.  This soft tissue work will help to restore the muscle balance and symmetry and help correct and restore muscle tone.

Benefits of Sports & Remedial Tissue Massage:

  • Enhances relaxation and wellbeing

A massage treatment can leave you feeling a little tired or sore, so plan to go easy on yourself for a while afterwards. Massage can have a dehydrating effect on the body, but you can combat this by drinking plenty of water before and afterwards. It is not a good idea to eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol before and after the hours leading up to your massage and for at least up to 1-2 hours after.
