What is Hand Therapy? Hand Therapy is a specialism of Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy and consists of the rehabilitation of patients with conditions affecting the hand and upper limb.
Hand Therapists provide specialist, client centred, evidence based treatment to enable patients to function following a hand injury, disease or deformity.
What does a Hand Therapist do? Hand Therapists can evaluate and identify problems affecting the upper limb and can provide advice regarding exercises, preventative care, bespoke splinting (supports), aids to daily living and much more.
Hand Therapists treat injuries and conditions including:
Congenital deformities (from birth) – conservative management and post surgery
Wrist injuries (ligament, tendon or boney)
Post-partum conditions (De Quervains syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome)
Rheumatoid arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Fibromyalgia
Hypermobility
Work related upper limb disorders including carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, trigger finger, tennis elbow
Sports and traumatic injuries including fractures, ligamentous sprain, tendinous strain, neuropraxia
Complex regional pain syndrome
Traumatic surgery aftercare – including nerve, tendon and skin grafts, tendon and nerve repairs, fractures with fixation
Elective surgery aftercare – such as trapeziectomy, swansons arthroplasty (joint replacements), fasciectomy
Abby has a wealth of experience in treating all hand related conditions from acquired conditions such as work related upper limb disorders (repetitive strain injuries) to major trauma including total hand replants and flexor tendon injuries. Abby is a registered member of the British Association of Hand Therapists, Royal College of Occupational Therapists and The Health and Care Professions Council.
